Background of the Study
Economic integration, particularly through multilateral agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), has significant implications for domestic labor standards. In Rivers State, the AfCFTA seeks to harmonize trade policies across Africa, creating a unified market that promotes economic growth and development. However, such integration also poses challenges as it may pressure domestic industries to lower labor standards in order to remain competitive in a liberalized market. The interplay between economic integration and labor policy reform is complex, involving negotiations between governments, employers, and labor unions. This study explores how the AfCFTA influences domestic labor standards in Rivers State, examining both the opportunities for improved labor rights through increased bargaining power and the risks of downward pressure on wages and working conditions. By analyzing policy documents, labor market data, and case studies from local industries, the research seeks to provide a balanced assessment of the impact of economic integration on labor standards and to propose strategies for ensuring that labor rights are upheld in the context of greater economic openness (Adeyemi, 2023; Musa, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Economic integration under the AfCFTA, while fostering growth, has raised concerns about the erosion of domestic labor standards in Rivers State. The pressure to compete in a larger market may lead to compromises in worker rights, wage levels, and job security. This study aims to identify the specific mechanisms through which economic integration impacts labor standards and to examine the policy gaps that allow for such downward pressure, with the ultimate goal of recommending measures that protect workers’ rights while promoting economic integration (Adeyemi, 2023; Musa, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the influence of the AfCFTA on domestic labor standards in Rivers State.
To identify the risks and challenges posed by economic integration on labor rights.
To recommend policy interventions that ensure labor standards are maintained.
